Orthodontic treatment
Orthodontic treatment in patients with oligodontia.
Summary of observations.

1) Orthognatic surgery very frequent.
Out of the total material 34% received orthognathic surgery, 36% had conventional orthodontic treatment, and only 3% had no formal orthodontic treatment.
2) Insufficient anchorage.
The amount of teeth can be insufficient for treatment with conventional braces alone. It may be necessary to place temporary orthodontic implants or to place some of the final implants to establish the necessary anchorage for the orthodontic treatment.
Extrusion of existing teeth to accomplish a bite raising may be postponed until implants have been inserted.
3) Retention.
It is important to secure retention of accomplished orthodontic treatment before implant placement and while oseointegration of implants is in progress. Removable splints, temporary bridges and bonding of teeth may be needed.
Otherwise a collaps of dental arch may occur.
4) Root direction.
Alignment of teeth/roots are critical
due to the following implant placement.
5) Size of edentulous space.
The size of the edentulous space among existing teeth
should be in accordance with the planned implant treatment
and prosthodontic reconstruction.
6) Timing of orthodontic treatment.
Preferably the orthodontic treatment should finish according to skeletal growth.
This enhances the orthodontic treatment and the succeeding implant treatment will not be delayed.
