Treatment planning - general considerations

General considerations
The timing and sequences of treatment are dependent of the age of the patient.

The consequences of elongation, tilting or impactions of teeth and loss of bite height should be prevented by interceptive treatment, if the patients are seen at an early stage (10-12 years old).

Surgical-orthodontic corrections and placement of dental implants in general must be postponed until skeletal growth is completed.

General growth observation is therefore established for all young patients,
where growth is not completed, i.e. radiographic observation of the skeletal maturation of the hand and growth in body height.
Patients referred at an early age, are therefore rescheduled after termination of growth, approximately at the age of 18 years.

The wishes and needs of the patients should be careful evaluated and compared to the treatment plan. It may be necessary to change the proposed treatment due to lack of cooperation from the patient.
In general the treatment of severe hypodontia takes several years before the final oral rehabilitation is achieved. It is therefore necessary for the compliance that the patients and their parents understand the extent of the treatment, become motivated and that they are confident with their doctors from the outset.
