After removal of cortical plate some bone chips can be obtained from the symphysis area, but don't harvest to deep. The nerve supply of the the canines and lower incisors can be affected - it is an unnecessary discomfort for the patient. Safe harvesting of bonechips can in many cases be obtained from the maxilarry tuberosities instead.

The donor area can be filled with a bone substitute and covered with a resorbable membrane, especially if you expect to return to the area again for more donor bone. In that case - wait at least one year and evaluate the area again with a lateral radiograph. However it is not considered as a necessary part of the procedure.
